Investments in shares of businesses or other assets that aren't traded publicly are referred to as unlisted investments. A different name for them is unquoted investments.

The businesses in question are typically tiny but have big ambitions for quick expansion and require funding to further their operations. They may have difficulty obtaining financing since traditional financial institutions view them as high-risk. Private equity from individual investors and money put directly in the businesses are two potential solutions.
